Course DescriptionThe National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators is an independent not-for-profit corporation formed in 1995 to establish and administer a nationwide program of certification for crane operators (CCO). The purpose of the CCO is to set standards for measuring the knowledge of crane operators and is designed by CCO to be a voluntary program. However, because of the 2000 agreement between OSHA and CCO, the increasing number of states requiring CCO certification for licensing, and the increasing frequency with which companies require CCO certification, it is strongly recommended that all Local 18 crane operators should prepare for and obtain CCO certification. In order to be certified by CCO, operators are required to demonstrate appropriate skills and knowledge necessary for safe crane operation. Included is a written examination consisting of a core and four specialty tests including small hydraulics, large hydraulics, lattice-boom truck, and lattice-boom crawler. All operators must take the core and at least one specialty test. These tests have been accredited by nationally recognized institutions. Operators must pay for their exams prior to the test date, but members of Local 18 will be reimbursed by the Ohio Operating Engineers Apprenticeship Fund after their successful completion. To complete the certification process, you are required to take and pass the practical tests. You must also have medical confirmation of ability to perform the job. Since the inception of CCO, Local 18 apprenticeship staff members have been involved in the creation of the CCO written and practical tests. |
